About Lia

By dint of Lia Pale's ethereal lightness, concentrated quality, engaging eroticism, clever humour and notably her unmistakable voice, the Upper Austrian played herself into the hearts of the European audience and critics with her debut production "gone too far" (Universal 37296613) that treads along the reputedly worn-out path of Franz Schubert's and Wilhelm Müller's 'Winter Journey': without lapsing into the banal or into clichés, without ingratiating herself, she was finally able to demonstrate her ingenuity in blending art and pop music in a sophisticated yet entertaining form. Mathias Rüegg, whom Pale is in the habit of mischievously but respectfully referring to as "the old man", marked out the musical itinerary in his perceptive, versed and mild manner, navigating the patently potent crew through music history, and this has certainly been and continues to be part of the (justified commercial) success.

Sven Thielmann vicariously wrote about the outcome of this unique collaboration:

"Anyone lamenting the passing of the Vienna Art Orchestra should be pleased to have Mathias Rüegg - after a creative break that was way too long - sign as the mastermind of the young singer Lia Pale. In their joint album "gone too far", they not only raised an ingenious monument to Franz Schubert's 'Winter Journey' adapted for contemporary jazz but also put out a scent that promised the boldest of aspirations. Lia Pale, whose stirring voice unfolds an unmistakable duct of singular quality, has splendidly measured up to these."

In "my poet’s love", Pale and Rüegg continue on their common path. And, as a result, they indeed develop new notions: of music and also of love. This time with reference to Heinrich Heine and Rainer Maria Rilke whose texts (seven from Rilke's complete works, seven from Heine's "Book of Songs") Rüegg - in his quest for Europe's and America's shared singer-songwriter sound - programmatically set to quasi chamber music in a balance between lyrical romanticism and modern jazz. These songs are contrasted by two sets of lyrics where Lia Pale for the first time speaks of her closeness to the two distinguished poets.– This in itself cries out for further stories!

Pale is again accompanied by the trio around her mentor Mathias Rüegg: two former musicians of the Vienna Art Orchestra, Ingrid Oberkanins and Hans Strasser, and the shooting star of the European trumpet scene, 24-year-old Mario Rom. Three cracks (from the former trumpet section of the Vienna Art Orchestra), Thomas Gansch, Juraj Bartos and Matthieu Michel, as well as three newcomers, Richard Köster, Dominik Fuss and Mario Rom, were invited to play on the 'my poet’s love’ album.

...And, on top of that, there is Lia. Her voice matured, following very difficult music lines perfectly, putting her again as a beautiful instrument inside the band, on one side, but as the clear voice to lead this action, on the other. Her approach is again between classic and jazz, defined and unpredicted, serious and joyful, open to wide audience and intriguing for specialists.“
Vojislav Pantic, jazz journalist / Belgrad

„Sovereign vocal abilities of Lia Pale are receiving full support of a well balanced band. Pure acoustic jazz with amazing trumpet solos.“
Marian Pavlik, www.jazz.sk

„The good news are: The search for beauty in arts is still existing.“
